Letter: Spend money on the children

Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 | 9:27 a.m.

As a 23-year-employee of the Clark County School District, and the parent of two children currently attending Clark County schools, I find it deeply troubling that our school district power brokers recently spent $4.8 million towards their most recent administrative reorganization and all the bells and whistles that accompanied this spending spree.

After three weeks of the new school year, I purchased a cassette tape player with my own money so the 31 children in my fourth grade class could have a reading/listening center and sing the "Star Spangled Banner" at the beginning of each day. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Spending one's own money is a regular occurrence for many Clark County School District classroom teachers if they are to effectively instruct our children. The Clark County School District constantly sings the blues when it comes to requesting needed material and supply monies for our school sites.

Perhaps in the future the school district power brokers may wish to consider spending options that would provide more money directed toward our schools and children.

This may not be the entire answer to this concern, but it's a big step in the right direction.
