Letter: Show terrorists we’re not afraid to fly

Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001 | 8:50 a.m.

We all expect our military to be courageous in our war against the terrorists, but what about us?

President Bush has urged us to resume normal activities, and federal, state, and local agencies are doing their darnedest to make flying safe. Yet many planes are flying half-empty, and many employees in the travel industry are being laid off.

It appears that many Americans are waving their flags from a fetal position. Maybe for them the lines of the national anthem should be "land of the free, home of the fearful."

Let's snap out of it, while not forgetting the people -- living and dead -- who were victimized by this disaster.

Let's get back to normal. If we don't, then the terrorists will have won.
