Juco star Barbour picks Kentucky over Rebels
Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001 | 10:03 a.m.
Guard Antwain Barbour, the nation's leading junior college basketball prospect, made an oral commitment to Kentucky on Wednesday, picking the Wildcats over UNLV and two others.
Barbour, who visited UNLV on Sept. 21, played last season under Rebels assistant coach Jay Spoonhour at Wabash Valley (Ill.) College, winning the national Juco title.
The 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Elizabethtown, Ky., also visited Cincinnati and Indiana. He made his announcement at a press conference at Mt. Carmel, Ill.
Barbour played for the U.S. in the World University Games in China in August, being the only Juco player on the roster.
Barbour's decision leaves UNLV with one scholarship left to give for 2002-03, and the Rebels will turn their attention to 6-foot-11 center Rafael Araujo of Western Arizona CC. He will be in Las Vegas this weekend for his official visit.
Before the November signing period, the Rebels will probably choose among Araujo and Juco forwards J.K. Edwards from Indian Hills (Iowa) CC and Eric Walton from Ventura (Calif.) JC.
UNLV's other 2002 signees are transfer point guard Demetrius Hunter from Georgetown (and Cheyenne HS) and 6-8 power forward James Peters from Butler County (Kan.) CC.
