Editorial: A positive step for the arts in Las Vegas
Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001 | 8:44 a.m.
It was promising over the weekend to see the opening of the Guggenheim Las Vegas museum and the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum, both of which are located in the Venetian resort's complex. At the Guggenheim Las Vegas, "The Art of the Motorcycle" exhibition was unveiled. The motorcycle is viewed as an expression of individualism and freedom -- making the exhibition a natural fit for Las Vegas, a city whose foundation and residents embody those same qualities.
If there is a downside to the exhibition, it is the admission fee: $15 for adults, clearly a price aimed at tourists. It would be nice to see local residents given a discount, making it more affordable and therefore more likely that Las Vegans could enjoy the show.
But, all in all, it's an encouraging sign, a trend started by Steve Wynn when he opened an art gallery at the Bellagio. Wynn now owns the Desert Inn, and soon plans on opening an art gallery at his new property. It is hoped that "The Art of the Motorcycle" show will whet the public's appetite for even more art. Who knows, maybe one day this even could lead to a permanent art museum, a cultural amenity that we think Las Vegas is ready for.
