Architects engineer food drive

Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001 | 8:32 a.m.

CANstruction, an annual competition sponsored by the Society of Design to gather food for the hungry, collected nearly 12,000 cans of food last week.

Every year competing teams of architects and engineers build giant sculptures made entirely out of canned or boxed food. At the end of the competition, the food used in the structures is donated to the Las Vegas Community Food Bank.

This year 13 teams participated and six were honored during a private program Sunday.

Dekker/Perish/Holmes/Sabatini Architects received an award for the best all-around meal category. The prize for the best use of labels went to Pacific Lighting Co. Bergman Walls and Associates won the trophy for best structural ingenuity.

KGA Architecture was given a prize for the Jurors' Favorite category, and both TJ Krob consulting engineers and JMA architecture studios received honorable mentions.
