Letter: Business first, people last
Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001 | 8:46 a.m.
I recently heard that Democratic Gov. Gray Davis has ordered unemployment checks to be increased by 43 percent for Californians who lost their jobs due to the recent cowardly murders of thousands of innocent people that were committed by Satanic fanatics.
Davis says this increase will continue so that those who became unemployed can get back on their feet until some sense of normalcy will hopefully return. This governor always speaks in a common-sense manner, directly and without notes or TelePromp-Ters.
Davis also stopped the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. in its tracks during its greedy feeding frenzy and attempts at gouging. He was successful in forcing PG&E to return the huge overpayments to its customers, and overcharges have now ceased in California. Any wonder that a true leader like Davis is so admired and respected by the majority?
Here in Nevada we cringe at the very thought of opening our power bill envelopes. And we are now told that Nevada Power may receive yet another giant increase next April -- just when we must use our air conditioners again. We are hearing no objections from our elected officials.
The thousands of Las Vegas employees heartlessly fired by the casinos immediately following the terrorist attack are receiving little if any temporary assistance -- lots of talk, little action in this extremely wealthy state.
Of course Nevada now has a compassionate conservative Republican governor, dedicated to deliberately confusing rhetoric, so we have little recourse. Big business revenues come first, people come last, and the beat goes on.
