Guggenheim plans donations to N.Y., local relief efforts

The Guggenheim Las Vegas museum had pledged a portion of this week's ticket sales to help victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and Las Vegans who have been laid off in the wake of the nationwide economic crunch from the disasters.
The museum, which opened Sunday, has pledged proceeds to the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund, assistance to emergency services personnel on the scene and help to local relief efforts to alleviate the burden of laid-off workers.
The museum is an offshoot of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City.
Other charitable acts for the victims in New York City and Washington, as well as those in Las Vegas affected by the slowed down economy:
* Futrell Financial Management is offering free financial planning advice to laid-off Las Vegas workers. "This is our way of reaching out and helping those in the community who have been affected by the national tragedy and economic turmoil," John Futrell, company principal, said. Those who want to make an appointment or get additional information can call (702) 889-8819.
* Ultimate Electronics, 741 S. Rainbow Blvd. and 2555 E. Tropicana Ave., will have collection jars available through the month to raise funds for the United Way Sept. 11 Fund. Ultimate Electronics has pledged $25,000 and says it will match dollar-for-dollar all public donations up to $50,000.
* Furr's Restaurant Group will serve free meals to police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians in uniform on Thursday. All 92 of the company's locations, including Las Vegas outlets, will offer either a free lunch or free dinner to the uniformed individuals as part of its company-wide day of appreciation.
* The National Alliance for Excellence has established the Towers of Excellence Memorial Scholarships to honor the memories of those killed in the terrorist attacks. The program allows people to remember a loved one or for companies and organizations to remember workers by establishing scholarships. For details contact the National Alliance for Excellence at (732) 747-0028.
