Basic pitcher agrees to play for Rebels

Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001 | 9:30 a.m.

Basic's Matt Elliott, a right-handed pitcher who has racked up 21 wins over the past three years for Basic High School, became the latest local player to give a verbal commitment to play for UNLV Monday.

The 6-foot-1 Elliott, a member of the Sun's all-state first team last spring, went 7-3 with one save, a 2.98 ERA and 73 strikeouts and 18 walks in 58 2/3 innings for Basic.

"He should make an immediate impact on the program," Basic coach Mike Kazek said. "I look forward to him having another really good year for us and then go right into college and not miss a beat."

Elliott said he chose the Rebels from a final list of colleges that also included Arizona State, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State.

"I like the program, the coaches and what they're going to do," Elliott said. "I like (first-year UNLV coach Jim Schlossnagle's) philosophy, what he wants to do with the program."
