Local fund-raising events under way
Monday, Oct. 8, 2001 | 9:41 a.m.
More than three weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, local organizations continue to help victims and the workers who were laid off in the economic downturn that followed.
On Nov. 3 the Police and Fire Emerald Society of Nevada, an organization started by local police and firefighters to collect money for the families of their peers killed in New York, will hold a fund-raising run-walk.
"We are proud to unite to serve the families of our brothers and sisters who died heroically trying to save innocent victims of the terrorist attacks," Sgt. Paul C. Page, the organization's president, said.
The Fun Run/Walk will take place at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas at 8:30 a.m.; registration begins at 7 a.m. Registration costs $10. Those who wish to pre-register or simply donate to the group may call (702) 229-4182.
Local businesses are helping too. Pictographics, an image digital graphics and printing bureau, will give a $3,000 check to the American Red Cross for assistance to the victims' families.
Other organizations are focusing their efforts on assisting laid-off workers.
Radio station KCEP 88.1-FM inaugurated a holiday food and toy drive today. The initiative, called Stuff-A-Bus, will run at various locations until Dec. 22.
Clark County's Child Care Assistance Program and the Salvation Army, among others, will benefit from Stuff-A-Bus.
For more information call (702) 647-2010 or (702) 648-0104.
Television station KVVU Channel 5 is helping local charities meet the increased demand for social services.
In a partnership with KXPT 97.1-FM, BankWest of Nevada and Sprint, the station created the Southern Nevada Community Fund. The fund will collect donations for five local nonprofit organizations, including Opportunity Village and the Nevada Association fo Latin Americans.
To donate, call (702) 458-1438.
