Letter: Citizens should shun hate crime

Friday, Oct. 5, 2001 | 4:31 a.m.

The tragic, horrendous events of Sept. 11 will forever remain in the hearts and minds of all Americans and people of the world. Many lives have been lost senselessly. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of the families of the victims. It saddens me to see what has become of the human race.

What are we to do as Americans as the world looks to us for our reaction? We are world citizens; a part of an international world that is becoming ever smaller, and we need to understand that all of our actions have far-reaching effects and implications.

At the same time, to see fellow Americans striking out at other fellow Americans with intolerance of differences and suspicions of the unknown is unacceptable. American Muslims and American Arabs are part of the fabric of our society. As doctors, engineers, lawyers, taxi drivers, teachers and laborers, we have helped build America.

I request everyone's support in condemning hate crimes and directing people against acts such as these. Help all of us to be proud to be Americans by your words and actions.
