Sun wins award for support ofmilitary

The Las Vegas Sun has won the highest award given to civilian employers in support of the National Guard and the Reserves.

The Nevada Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve on Saturday awarded the Sun the Pro Patria Award, the highest of 31 honors given during its annual awards banquet.

"The Sun has earned this award many times over, because of its patriotism and support of the national defense effort," said Ted Marshall, who presented the award on his last day as the group's chairman.

The award came about a year after the Sun started the column "In Uniform," which chronicles activities of active-duty, reserve and Guard members from the Las Vegas area.

But, Marshall said, the Sun's coverage of Guard and Reserve activities was consistently good for years before the column.

He noted the support, in particular, from Executive Editor Mike O'Callaghan, both a Marine and Army veteran, who won the committee's State Chairman Award in the early 1980s.

The Pro Patria has been won in past years by the Mirage and Harrah's.
