Sun Athletes of the Week: Justin Arnold and Chaz Lahodny
Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001 | 9:04 a.m.
Male Athlete of the Week: JUSTIN ARNOLD
School: Chaparral
Class: Senior
Sport: Football
Last week: Arnold, the Cowboys' starting quarterback, engineered two touchdown drives in the final eight minutes to lead his club to a 21-14 come-from-behind victory over Foothill in the teams' Southeast Division opener Friday night. Arnold, who completed 10-of-13 passes for 184 yards and also ran 13 times for 42 yards, helped his team drive 66 yards in 40 seconds for the final touchdown, a 25-yard strike to receiver Derek Niggemeier with nine seconds to play. "He's a very competitive kid who hates to lose," Chaparral coach Ben Johnson said. "When the game is on the line, he plays even better. He kept his composure and did a nice job leading us."
Female Athlete of the Week: CHAZ LAHODNY
School: Faith Lutheran
Class: Senior
Sport: Cross Country
Last week: Lahodny captured the senior division at Saturday's Angel Park Invitational, winning the 3.1 mile race with a time of 20:40, fastest for any girl in the field. Lahodny sat out the 1999 cross country season after transferring from Clark, then missed last year with an injury, undergoing surgery to have three pins inserted into a torn knee. "She really worked hard this summer to get back, and she's been running some great times," Crusaders coach Jessica Scobell said. "She's a smarter runner now. She knows a lot about her limits, and how to push those limits. And being a senior, she's really the leader of our group."
