Firm wants to revive suit over denial of license

BATON ROUGE, La. -- A company that failed in its bid for a riverboat casino license wants to proceed with its suit against two men who pleaded guilty in the riverboat corruption case against former Gov. Edwin Edwards.
The owners of Astoria Entertainment asked U.S. District Judge Frank Polozola to lift an injunction on the suit against former San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. and former riverboat owner Robert Guidry, according to court documents released Tuesday.
Astoria claimed it was unfairly cut out of consideration for casino licenses in the New Orleans area and asked for damages. The suit claims Guidry and DeBartolo interfered with Astoria's contract rights.
Polozola blocked the civil suit against DeBartolo and Guidry, government witnesses who testified in the case, in April 1999 until the end of the trial. Prosecutors had argued that information sought in the civil suit would not otherwise be available to Edwards and his co-defendants in the criminal trial.
Edwards was convicted on charges he extorted applicants for riverboat casino licenses. His son Stephen and three other men also were convicted in the case. Edwards faces a 10-year prison sentence, but is out of jail while he appeals.
