Air unhealthful for third day

Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001 | 10:42 a.m.

Southern Nevada's air stayed in the unhealthful category today in the northwest part of the Las Vegas Valley, affecting people sensitive to dust and smoke pollution.

Three Clark County Air Quality Division monitors recorded unhealthy air, including a 139 recording on the index at Lone Mountain Road in northwestern Las Vegas. That means roughly 139 particles of dust or smoke in a cubic yard of air. Pollution at this level affects primarily young children, the elderly and those with heart or lung disease.

Seven other monitors registered moderate levels of particulates, all of the stations recording particulates below the 100 level on the index.

The air over the Las Vegas Valley has been stagnant since Friday, National Weather Service meteorologists said. Pollution climbed into the unhealthful levels on Monday. Winds are not expected to pick up enough to blow the pollution out of the valley until Friday.
