UMC medical director quits unexpectedly

Friday, Nov. 30, 2001 | 10:48 a.m.

Dr. Byron Brown, medical director of University Medical Center since January of 1999, has quit unexpectedly, officials at the county hospital said this morning.

The Clark County Commission, UMC's board of trustees, is expected to approve the termination of Brown's contract at its meeting Tuesday, hospital spokesman Rick Plummer said.

Only UMC chief executive William Hale knew of Brown's decision before the board's agenda was posted this morning, Plummer said.

The contract termination, listed seventh on the 14-item UMC agenda, would be effective Dec. 7.

Brown's exit was a "mutually agreed-upon decision," Plummer said.

The exact reasons for Brown's departure were not immediately known, and he could not be reached for comment this morning.

"Dr. Brown is a very well-liked and respected professional," Plummer said. "There are a lot of people here who will miss him."

Brown graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle in 1974. He did his residency training at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
