Townsend named new audit chief

Friday, Nov. 30, 2001 | 10:20 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- A certified public accountant who has conducted some high-profile audits of state agencies has been named chief of the audit division in the Nevada Legislative Counsel Bureau.

Paul Townsend will take over the $90,000 a year job upon approval of the Legislative Commission, which meets Dec. 14. He will succeed Gary Crews, who retired.

The selection was made by Lorne Malkiewich, director of the Legislative Counsel Bureau. He said there were about a dozen applicants, and the finalists were people who worked in the agency.

Townsend has been with the audit division for 14 years, 11 as a supervisor. He was supervising auditor in the examination in 1999 of the University and Community College System of Nevada, in the review in 2000 of the adequacy of textbooks in Nevada's public schools and in 1997-'98 of the medical services supplied prison inmates.

Malkiewich said Thursday that Townsend of Carson City is acting chief of the division until the selection is ratified by the commission.
