Day of the Child vigil on Saturday

Friday, Nov. 30, 2001 | 9 a.m.

The Kierra Harrison Foundation for Child Safety will sponsor the second annual Day of the Child Candlelight Vigil at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Sawyer State Office Building, Washington Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard.

Packets will be distributed to parents on how to talk to their children about terrorism. Other packets will be given to emergency medical personnel on how to deal with abused children.

The Kierra Harrison Foundation was established by Pamela Rowse in the memory of her 14-month-old granddaughter, who suffered a fatal blow to the head in 1997. Alica Wegner, a child-care provider, was found guilty of first-degree murder by child abuse, but the case was overturned by the Nevada Supreme Court. A new trial is scheduled for April.

Rowse, who is a nurse, is the Southern Nevada ambassador for Day of the Child, a national grass-roots organization for the prevention of child abuse through increased public awareness.
