Chowning must change districts

Assemblywoman Vonne Chowning, D-North Las Vegas, said Monday she will run for re-election, but it will require her to move a few blocks into another Assembly district.

The 2001 Legislature reapportioned the Assembly, putting Democrats Chowning and Doug Bache of Las Vegas in the same district. Bache said he intends to run for re-election in that district.

Chowning, who has served six terms, said she will move into her old District 28, where there is no incumbent.

Chowning has been chairwoman of the Assembly Transportation Committee for the last three sessions and was co-chairwoman in the 1995 Legislature, when Democrats and Republicans shared the chairmanships.

Transformer fails in southwest

An electrical transformer at Blue Diamond Road and Decatur Boulevard failed about 5:30 p.m. Monday, cutting power to about 3,000 Nevada Power Company customers.

Power was gradually restored within hours to those living in the southwestern section of the Las Vegas Valley.
