License plates will be replaced

Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001 | 9:44 a.m.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles this week began mailing replacement license plates to motorists whose registrations expire in January.

The DMV throughout next year will replace all of the silver and blue "Big Horn Sheep" license plates with the multicolored "Sunset" plates.

"Our goal is to carry out this legislation with a minimal inconvenience to our customers," DMV Director Ginny Lewis said. "No DMV office visit is necessary and we encourage motorists to renew their vehicle registration by alternate measures -- the Internet, mail, telephone or at emissions inspection stations."

The DMV warns that, in the case of motorists who have moved, the U.S. Postal Service will not forward plates even if a change of address notice has been filed with the post office. Motorists who have moved or whose ZIP codes have been changed have to notify the DMV by either mailing a DMV change of address form or logging it at the DMV website (www.dmvstat.com).

Those who do not replace the Big Horn Sheep plates by Dec. 31, 2002, can be cited by law enforcement officers, the DMV said.
