Border crossing issues help U.S. casinos

Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001 | 9:33 a.m.

DETROIT -- Border security problems have helped the city's three casinos achieve their highest monthly revenues ever.

The MGM Grand, MotorCity and Greektown casinos reported that their revenues rose 47 percent in October from the same period last year.

It was the first full month of financial results reported by the three Detroit casinos since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Combined revenues rose to $93 million from $63.2 million a year ago.

Tighter border security has discouraged gamblers from crossing Canadian checkpoints to visit Casino Windsor.

Historically, more than 80 percent of Casino Windsor's business comes from the United States.

For weeks after Sept. 11, Casino Windsor reported that its business levels were off by 50 percent.

To spur business, Casino Windsor slashed room rates, stepped up advertising and enhanced gamblers' perks.

Despite the efforts, Casino Windsor's traffic remains down about 40 percent.
