It's too bad there are only 12 days of Christmas. Were there 13, participants in this years Sun Holiday Auction could pick up a snazzy cap or golf shirt or die-cast car to go along with their leaping lords and milking maids.

This year marks the fourth holiday season the Sun will hold a bidding sweepstakes to find a happy home for our Misfit Payola - items of goodwill that are given to us by the people behind or associated with the stories we report on during the year.

We dont keep any of this stuff, because ethically it wouldnt be right. Besides, we would need a closet the size of Imelda Marcos to store it all away.

You wont find any shoes in the big box down in the Suns television studio where all these items are temporarily being kept, but there are plenty of T-shirts, tote bags and even a pair of metallic jockey shorts (honest). There are also walkie-talkies, a book of drawings by the late Beatle John Lennon and enough Helmut Lang cologne to make even the Detroit Lions smell good.

As they say, everything must go - the TV anchors need the room for their hairspray - and, of course, it must go to a good cause. All money raised by this years auction will be turned over to the Las Vegas Sun Camp Fund.

So if you want to send a kid to camp, are in search of a unique gift or stocking stuffer for that hard-to-buy-for uncle on your list or secretly have been pining for a "Dude, Wheres My Car?" T-shirt, nows your chance:

Instructions

Study the brief descriptions of the items listed. List your bid by using the numbers listed, on a sheet of paper or a 3x5 index card (preferred). You may bid on as many items as you like, but each bid must be listed on a separate piece of paper or index card. No exceptions.

Mail or drop-off bids

Las Vegas Sun Holiday Auction, 2275 Corporate Circle Drive, Suite 300, Henderson, NV 89014. On each bid, list the price you are willing to pay for the item, along with name, address, and daytime and evening phone numbers. Or drop off your bid at the Las Vegas Sun office, 2275 Corporate Circle Drive in Henderson (Green Valley Parkway at the I-215 off ramp). The Suns office is on the third floor.

E-mail rules

You may also bid on items by visiting the Sun website ( http://www.lasvegassun.com ) and clicking on the Sun Holiday Charity auction link. Again, send a separate e-mail for each item you want to bid on. Items must be picked up in person, so if you e-mail from Keokuk, Iowa, and aren't planning on spending the holidays in Las Vegas, save the bandwidth.

Deadlines

The deadline for bidding on merchandise is Friday, Dec. 14. Merchandise can be picked up during business hours (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) at the Sun building beginning Monday, Dec. 17. Winning bidders will be notified by telephone (mail or drop-off bids) or by e-mail. All sales are final.

Please do not call the Sun to inquire about merchandise.
