Grand opening planned Tuesday

The grand opening of Martin Luther King School Park, 5439 E. Carey Ave., will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The dedication ceremony will include a performance by the King school choir.

The eight-acre park features a playground, basketball courts, volleyball courts, shade shelters with picnicking amenities, open grass areas, and a parking lot. Approximately 600 students of King will attend the grand opening event.

18-acre facility to be constructed

Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will break ground on Acadia Park, southwest of the U.S. 95 intersection with Lake Mead Drive, 2 p.m. Tuesday at the site.

The 18-acre park, scheduled to be completed by late 2002 or early 2003, will include a ballfield, two soccer fields, a playground, a water play area, a dog park, a basketball court and restrooms.

It also will include a desert demonstration garden, featuring models of back yards, edible and allergy-free gardens, wetlands areas, irrigation options, drought-tolerant plants, garden paving, animal habitat, six gardens and Mojave Desert areas. The garden areas will have a shaded area for classes and events.

The $3.9 million cost is covered by a tax-neutral voter-approved bond.

Children's stories will be read

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitors Center. To make reservations or for information call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:

Story Time at Red Rock: Southwest children's stories will be read every half hour 1-3 p.m. Dec. 1 by members of the Clark County Library Web on Wheels staff.

North Peak Expedition: A five-mile strenuous hike for adults.

Nevada State Symbols: 20-minute programs 1-3 p.m. Dec. 3 on how Mojave Desert biodiversity is illustrated by Nevada state symbols.

Former FBI agent to speak

A retired FBI agent will speak to the Augustus Society, a Southern Nevada organization of professional Italian Americans, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Executive Room of the Imperial Palace.

Walter B. Stowe Jr., who was with the Las Vegas FBI office from 1992 to 1999 and handled organized crime, white collar crime and casino fraud cases, will lecture at the monthly membership meeting.

Also on the program will be Dani Carideo, a student from Hyde Park Middle School Math and Science Academy, who participated in the Eisenhower Presidential People to People Program as student ambassador.
