Columnist Kate Maddox: Fight or flight for Roseanne showgoers

Friday, Nov. 23, 2001 | 1:03 a.m.

Insiders say the affable Anderson, who performed for 45 minutes, was a major crowd pleaser, but Rosie was bitter and mean. Apparently the audience routinely filed out almost immediately after Roseanne took the stage.

The mass exodus of the crowds apparently didn't do anything to help the situation -- or Roseanne's mood. On one occasion the former Roseanne, using a colorful barrage of obscenities, yelled loudly at departing patrons. Roseanne's behavior was reportedly so out of control that some observers went so far as to question the comedian's state of mind, because she certainly didn't appear to be under the influence of comedic talent. But, hey, at least she didn't sing the national anthem.

Poor Tryst. The "adult-oriented" nightclub, which according to the promoter's description is "not a swinger sex party," but rather a party that encourages "playful erotic behavior" between "couples and like-minded single women," got the boot from the Las Vegas City Council after applying for permanent after-hours space in a Summerlin eatery. Shocker.

This columnist wrote about one of the club's previous attempts at finding acceptance in Sin City back in July. Tryst took over a fancy restaurant's space after closing time at a popular Vegas casino for one of its sex-fueled meet-and-greets, but the only major impact from that round came from the Nevada Gaming Control Board, which started asking questions at the hotel after the party.

Needless to say, further parties in casinos aren't gonna happen -- which prompted the recent bid from Marc's World Cuisine. Marc's applied to enter into a lease agreement with Tryst, allowing the club to operate once a month from 11 p.m.-3 a.m. in the restaurant. However a concerned City Council, apparently unnerved by Tryst's risque advertising, put the kibosh on that plan on Wednesday. A note on the Tryst website reads "Our 11/24 dance has been canceled ... there will be, sad to say, no dancing, no dj, no cover & no tryst."

Britney Spears almost didn't make her Vegas gig because she didn't have a thing to wear. Seems part of her costume collection, including the bedazzled Elvis suit Spears wore in HBO concert promotions, was stolen prior to her show last Sunday at MGM Grand Garden Arena. The sexy white jumper was designed exclusively for her Vegas engagement. Spears was apparently so pouty about the theft that she moped for hours backstage before finally donning her "back-up" wardrobe.

Frazzled, jostled by crowds and frankly sick of the hooplah, I found the perfect antidote to the Palms' opening weekend: The Palms Spa. The tiny Asian-inspired oasis (adjacent to the hotel's salon, AMP) is just the ticket to soothe frayed nerves and relax before heading back to the front lines at Ghostbar, Rain, N9NE, Buddha Bar, etc. Look for the Spa to advertise local's packages in coming weeks, and get in there. Trust me. Pushing and shoving hurt less when operating in an aroma-therapied, post-massage haze.

The E! Entertainment Channel is going on an "Ocean's 11" binge starting Dec. 3. E!, which airs locally on Cox cable channel 36, is planning in-depth interviews with stars George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Matt Damon. E!'s answer to Barbara Walters, Jules Asner, will be asking the questions. But don't look for her to play hardball with the stars. See, bad publicity would be bad for the movie, which would then be bad for the director, and that would be bad for Asner's boyfriend. Asner is reportedly romantically involved with "Ocean's 11's" Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh.
