Learn more about Colorado River area

Guided hikes and informative talks are offered by the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Some coming programs:

Mysteries of the Deep: A one-hour evening program at 7 p.m. Friday that explores the impact on people and land when the Colorado River was backed up to form Lake Mead.

Sugarloaf Mountain Hike: A four-mile hike that begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, will lead through a colorful wash to a historical area that overlooks the Black Canyon and the Colorado River. Call for reservations.

Dusk/Full Moon Hike: A two-mile hike that begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Boulder Beach Ranger Station.

The events are free and most begin at the park's Alan Bible Visitor Center northeast of Boulder City. Reservations are required for the guided hikes. Call 293-8990.

Citizens can take 40-hour program

The Las Vegas Department of Fire & Rescue services is taking applications for its Citizens Fire Academy, a program designed to inform residents about the fire service.

The 40-hour program is an opportunity for citizens to find out how firefighters work and to learn first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation skills.

The 2001 class will be limited to 50 students divided into two groups. One of them will attend class on Tuesday nights, and the other will meet on Thursdays. All classes are held from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.

In addition to the classroom training, students will participate in a hands-on class at the fire training center and go on a ride-along with firefighters.

Applications are available at the Fire & Rescue Headquarters at 500 N. Casino Center Blvd. or on the Internet (www.lasvegasfire.org).

The deadline to submit applications is the end of December.

Jingle Bell Jog planned Dec. 1

The Junior League of Las Vegas will present its fifth annual "Jingle Bell Jog's 5K Run and One-mile Fun Walk" at 7:15 a.m. Dec. 1 at Sunset Station.

All age groups may participate in the event to raise money and awareness to benefit Junior League's current and future projects in the community such as Education Grants, KLVX Channel 10's Ready to Learn and CLASS, Child Watch, HELP of Southern Nevada, Done in a Day, and Community Grants.

Entries accepted for annual contest

The Las Vegas chapter of the International Association of Business Communications is calling for entries for its annual Bronze Quills Awards.

The competition is open to any organization or individual who prepares business communication projects for distribution in Nevada.

The awards honor the best in business communications.
