Columnist Paula DelGiudice: Young hunter takes best shot

Things are pretty quiet this week in the outdoors as families prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving.

It's the traditional time for sheep hunters to figure out how to combine hunting with giving thanks. The dry, warm weather we've had may be keeping sheep tied pretty closely to water -- that would be something for which to give thanks.

My son Kevin took his first shot at ducks last weekend during a trip to Elko. We bought him his first shotgun just before the trip and he had a chance to do some practice shooting and then try his hand at some jump shooting.

The birds were pretty spooky and were getting up a bit far away. He loved every minute of it, though, and his Christmas list this year makes me think we'll spend more money at Cabela's than at Toys "R" Us. He's growing up way too fast.

Ivy Santee, NDOW angler education coordinator, said that it will be a hands-on class for beginners. Participants will learn the basics of fly tying and will tie a fly. All equipment and materials will be provided. To register, call NDOW at 486-5127, ext 3504.

Pronghorn antelope management will be discussed at the meeting. Also on the agenda is a request to approve funds to rehabilitate an upland game bird water development (guzzler).

The public is invited to attend the meeting and provide comments.

Input from the board will be provided to the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners prior to their Nov. 30-Dec. 1 meeting in Reno.
