Letter: Terror roots may be bred on our streets

Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001 | 8:33 a.m.

Friday, while sitting in a local park talking to my mother on my cell phone, three boys stole my purse. They entered the park walking in front of me, then circled the park, coming up in back of me. The first two boys passed, and the third politely asked me for the time. When I glanced at my watch, he grabbed my purse and ran off, following the other boys.

Fortunately a Custom Cooling and Refrigeration repairman was on the roof of a house in the direction they were running. He heard my yelling and came off the roof to help, eventually rescuing my purse.

Two articles in Friday's Sun caught my eye because of the day's events.

The first was Brian Greenspun's column, "Time to give thanks." I give thanks that I was not hurt, and that a good Samaritan was there and willing to help.

The second article was titled "Nevada rates next to last in high school graduates." Why were these boys in the park at 10:50 a.m.? I know the magnitude of this crime is minute, but I think the question Mr. Greenspun asked relates to this situation, also: "What are we going to do to make sure that this country and its people never again aid, abet, play host or give shelter to people who believe that terrorism is acceptable at any level?"

We can't even keep kids in school and out of trouble! I think we need more repairmen.
