Burglaries were up slightly at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas last year, while car thefts were down, according to campus crime statistics released by the U.S. Department of Education.

The statistics were compiled by the National Center for Education Statistics for the nation's 6,269 colleges, universities and career schools. The statistics represent alleged crimes reported to campus and local police.

Last year 76 burglaries were reported at UNLV, compared with 65 in 1999 and 87 in 1998. There were 17 car thefts according to the statistics, down from 20 in 1999, but up from 12 in 1998.

Forcible sex offenses were down at the school from six in 1999 to one last year. None was reported in 1998.

The report states that there were a total of 24 drug, liquor and weapons-related arrests on campus last year, down from 27 in 1999 and 44 in 1998.

The only crimes reported at the Community College of Southern Nevada's Cheyenne campus were 12 stolen cars, up from four in 1999 and eight in 1998. Statistics were not available for the other community college campuses.

At University of Nevada, Reno, aggravated assault was up from one in 1998 and three in 1999 to 12 last year. Forcible sex offenses were also up at UNR, with four last year, one in 1999 and two in 1998.

There were no hate crimes reported at either of the two universities or at the community college.

The statistics can be found at the U.S. Department of Education website (ope.ed.gov/security). Institutions are required to collect crime statistics and distribute an annual security report to current students and employees.
