Letter: We lost our freedom in Election 2000
Friday, Nov. 16, 2001 | 4:28 a.m.
This is in response to letter writer Noel Murphy, who accused another reader of being narrow-minded because the writer stated "We will suffer under Bush."
No, Mr. Murphy, it is you who needs to broaden your horizons. In my opinion, and the opinion of millions of other people, Bush and the Supreme Court did steal the election.
If you read the entire report by the consortium, it stated that Gore would have lost the election in the three counties for which he requested a recount. He really wanted a statewide recount, but could not even get a recount in three counties. It goes on to state that in a statewide recount, Gore actually won Florida.
To those of you who believe he actually got a recount, you are mistaken. Miami-Dade County stopped their recount because of a group of hired thugs. The Palm Beach County recount was stopped by Katherine Harris, because, after counting for three days and nights, they were two hours late in turning in the results. Finally, the recount was stopped, illegally, by the Republican-laden Supreme Court.
None of this included the issue of several thousand black people who were disenfranchised due to an absurd police road block. I am a senior citizen, and have had my father, husband and brother fight in various wars, for our freedom and democracy. In my opinion, we lost that democracy through Election 2000.
In addition, through Bush's new anti-terrorist bill and his secret military tribunal, I believe we have now lost our freedom. I will never get over this!
