Culinary ordered to halt meetings on property

Friday, Nov. 16, 2001 | 10:14 a.m.

A federal judge ordered the Culinary Union to stop holding large union meetings in the Castaways hotel-casino's employee dining room, saying the sessions cause "unnecessary disruptions" and affect workers' performance.

The Castaways hotel-casino in Las Vegas on Tuesday sued Culinary locals 165 and 226, alleging they violated a "no-strike"provision in the collective bargaining agreement between the casino hotel and the Culinary.

The Culinary argued it only wanted to talk to union employees about their workloads.

U.S. District Judge Lloyd George ruled on Wednesday: "The (Castaways) will suffer more harm from the denial of a temporary restraining order than will defendants from its issuance, as it appears that defendants have other venues in which to hold their large group or 'mass' meetings."
