School Board’s Policy Governance questioned

Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001 | 8:48 a.m.

Until now there has been little fanfare at School Board meetings in regard to "Policy Governance," a management guideline used by the board.

But Lucille Lusk, a member of Nevada Concerned Citizens and a former School Board member, approached the board during a workshop Tuesday with questions on how Policy Governance works and how to improve it.

In a letter to the board, Lusk said policies are written unclearly and are often placed on board agendas in areas that tend to prompt little discussion.

Lusk said her group would like to see more opportunities for public input while policies are being developed. "With the discontinuation of the policy and curriculum committees, we are looking for meaningful avenues for citizen input into policy changes that affect our children," she said. School Board President Mary Beth Scow said a written response is being prepared to address Lusk's concerns.
