Letter: Pedestrians need to know the rules

Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001 | 8:30 a.m.

Letter writer Daniel Dorse believes the way to reduce or eliminate injury and death to jaywalkers is to increase the fine and enforce the ordinance. That might work until you consider who is doing the jaywalking. A lot of it is done by folks running across mid-block to catch a CAT bus.

Trying to get increased fine money out of those who are totally reliant on public transportation is like trying to get blood from a stone. In the UNLV area it is a lot of folks who were driven everywhere in elementary and secondary schools: to and from school, soccer practice, dance class, etc.

They are now undergraduates in a university and have yet to be taught how to cross a street, with the light, at an intersection.

What is needed is a public information campaign that points out the difference between our pedestrian right of way law and that of California.

Pedestrian error is not only a reality here. It can get you killed!
