Editorial: Fireworks just what the doctor ordered

Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001 | 8:20 a.m.

With each passing year Las Vegas has turned out to be one of the hottest spots in the nation for people to usher in the new year. This year is no exception: The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Las Vegas Events will spend $500,000 to put on a seven-minute, patriotic-themed fireworks show for New Year's, one that will follow last year's great show.

Our tourism-based economy still hasn't completely recovered from the terrorist attacks -- people aren't traveling as much as they were before Sept. 11. The competition among tourist destination cities likely will be intense for the holiday, which makes it all the more reason why Las Vegas should put on an exciting show to draw travelers here.

Tourism officials haven't forgotten the dismal New Year's performance by Las Vegas two years ago. Cities around the world put on elaborate fireworks displays to mark the millennium while Las Vegas, ostensibly the city of excitement, did virtually nothing to celebrate the occasion. That was an embarrassment that tourism officials fortunately aren't going to let happen again.
