Choose from a variety of hikes

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitors Center. To make reservations or for information call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:

Oak Creek Hike: A two-mile moderately easy hike for ages 7 to adult, Wednesday.

Ash Creek -- A Spring of Life: A two-mile moderate hike for ages 10 to adult to discover how water has transformed the desert into a mini-oasis, Friday.

Ice Box with Kate: A three-hour round-trip hike for families to learn about the plants, geology and other interesting things, Saturday.

Cathedral Rock Hike: A three-mile moderately strenuous hike for adults. Meet at Cathedral Rock parking lot steps in Mount Charleston's Kyle Canyon, Saturday.

Three Trails -- One Hike: A six-mile moderate hike for ages 12 to adult to explore the base of the escarpment and discover views of Red Rock, Sunday.

Public invited to town meeting

A six-member panel of experts will discuss the proposed high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in UNLV's Wright Hall, Room 103. The town hall meeting is free and open to the public.

The panel's topic is "Science, the Law and Who Gets the Risks." The public forum is sponsored by the Nevada Agency for Nuclear Projects, the agency in charge of oversight at the Department of Energy project; UNLV's Department of Political Science and the Division of Continuing Education.

Seminar to focus on home business

The Women's Business Center will present a seminar, "Home-Based Child Care," 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Nevada Micro Enterprise Initiative, 1600 E. Desert Inn Road.

Wendy Smith of the city of Las Vegas will review the regulations involved with opening a home based child care business, including the zoning laws for the city.

The National Association of Retired Federal Employees

will sponsor the annual "Open Season Health Benefits Fair" 9 a.m.-noon Friday at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. All current and retired federal employees are welcomed. Call 647--4004.

The Nevada Youth Alliance

presents "Volunteer Appreciation Night" a celebration from 5-10 tonight at the Regent Las Vegas, 221 N. Rampart Blvd. Admission is free. RSVP to Cherri at 400-1160.
