Two pedestrians killed in separate accidents

Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 | 9:25 a.m.

Metro Police are investigating two Friday morning car accidents that resulted in the deaths of two pedestrians.

The first happened about 5:15 a.m., when police say Robert J. Borek, 52, of Las Vegas, tried to cross Las Vegas Boulevard in front of the Stardust hotel and walked into the path of an oncoming Dodge Stratus.

The driver of the Stratus, which was traveling north on Las Vegas Boulevard, hit her brakes and veered to the left in an effort to avoid Borek, police said.

About 8:50 a.m. another pedestrian was hit by a car at the intersection of Desert Inn Road and Cambridge Street. An 89-year-old woman was standing on a raised concrete center median as she tried to cross Desert Inn, when a Honda Prelude headed east on Desert Inn drove onto the median and hit the woman, police said.

The pedestrian was taken to University Medical Center, where she died of her injuries shortly after arriving.

The Honda continued east on Desert Inn and pulled over near Maryland Parkway after the front left tire went flat from striking the median, police said. The driver was attempting to change the tire when police arrived.

Deborah Fong, 33, was arrested on felony charges of DUI involving death, hit and run and failing to maintain a travel lane.
