CARSON CITY -- Twenty more members of the Nevada National Guard have been called to active duty to increase security at airports in Las Vegas, Reno and Elko.
Adjutant General Giles Vanderhoof said the extra personnel should be on duty sometime this week and will augment the 140 guardsmen now on airport detail.
"Having the extra personnel available gives us more flexibility in how we use the National Guard, especially as the holidays approach," Gov. Kenny Guinn said Friday.
Each guardsman will undergo background checks and FAA training.
Guinn and Vanderhoof said that in addition to performing the security checkpoint duty, the additional personnel will be used in other capacities at the airport. The majority of the new guard members is expected to serve at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.
