Telephone rate hike request filed

Local phone customers of Sprint Corp. may see a "substantial" rate increase by next summer, Sprint officials say.
The dominant local phone provider in the Las Vegas Valley on Thursday filed a petition for a rate increase of unspecified magnitude with state regulators.
Spokeswoman Detra Page said she couldn't say how much of a rate increase Sprint will seek from regulators.
"It will be substantial. It's because we can't keep up with the growth in Southern Nevada at the current rates. We need to be able to recover the cost to serve our customers in the valley," Page said.
