Longtime rancher List dies at 94

Frank List, father of former Nevada Gov. Bob List, died Sunday at the age of 94.
A longtime Northern Nevada rancher, farmer, private pilot and outdoorsman and Washoe County resident for 50 years, List died at Pershing General Hospital in Lovelock.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Carson City.
"Frank was a true Westerner and a thoughtful gentleman at all times," said Mike O'Callaghan, executive editor of the Sun and governor before Bob List.
Frank List was born Dec. 19, 1906, in Gardenia, Calif., to B.F. List and the former Daisy Way. At 20, Frank List acquired his first plane and, two years later, obtained his pilot's license.
He graduated from the University of California at Davis in 1927 and earned a degree in agriculture from Utah State University in 1929.
Frank List married Alice Allegra Dove in Glendale, Calif., on Sept. 4, 1931. She preceded him in death in March 1997. She was 87.
The couple began a family ranching and farming business in the early 1930s that is still in operation today. They began in Exeter, Calif., and in 1951 moved the operation to a ranch in the south Washoe Valley near Carson City.
Bob List, one of Frank and Alice's three children, served as governor of Nevada 1980-84. Bob and his wife, Polly, today are residents of Las Vegas.
In his spare time, Frank List enjoyed hunting and fly fishing.
In June 2000, he moved to Lovelock.
Frank List was a member of the Quiet Birdmen, Sheriff's Aerosquadron, the National Cattlemen's Association and the Nevada Farm Bureau.
In addition to his son, List is survived by another son, Alan List, and his wife, Nancy, of Lovelock; a daughter, Bonnie Sutphin, and her husband, Dave, of Saratoga, Calif.; a sister, Anna Marjorie McGee of Montgomery, Ala.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.
The family said donations can be made to the List Family Memorial Fund at the First Presbyterian Church of Carson City.
