Letter: With high costs, veterans need our help now

Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001 | 9 a.m.

In regard to Veterans Day: I used to work with a guy who was a Vietnam veteran. One day I wished him a happy Veterans Day and shook his hand. He looked at me in shock with teary eyes and said, "No one ever wished me a happy Veterans Day before."

I recently started a job in the Medicare supplement insurance business and I now talk with seniors daily. I am deeply saddened and frustrated due to the many seniors, mostly who are veterans of World War II and are deprived. With the rising cost of utilities, gasoline and medical care they cannot survive. They need help now!

We must remember and show gratitude to all these veterans and their surviving spouses, and give them a helping hand. We must never forget these people and the sacrifices they made. If our own government won't help them, then maybe the Red Cross can. Or maybe it will be left to you and I.
