Governor opposes new casinos, even after economic slowdown

Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001 | 9:58 a.m.

PEWAUKEE, Wis. -- Gov. Scott McCallum said Tuesday he would not authorize building new tribal casinos to pump money into the state's coffers as it faces a possible budget shortfall.

Last week, the state of New York approved its largest gambling expansion ever, which included building six new casinos. Lawmakers there said expanding gambling in New York could raise an additional $1 billion annually within three years.

McCallum has said he opposes expanding gambling in Wisconsin. He reiterated his position Tuesday, saying the current economic downturn has not changed his mind.

"Seventeen casinos are enough," McCallum told the Associated Press. "I don't see casinos fitting into our new economy."

McCallum has said the state could lose between $300 million and $1.3 billion in income and sales tax revenues as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
