Donations sought for community partnership
The North Las Vegas Detention Employees Community Partnership will hold its second annual Holiday Food Drive to feed 30 families at Thanksgiving and another 30 at Christmas.
Each box should have a least one turkey, three cans of green beans, three cans of corn, two boxes stuffing mix, two cans of yams, two cans of cranberry sauce, one bag of marshmallows, one box of pie crust, one pumpkin pie mix, one small bag potatoes, onions, celery, one package dinner rolls and two foil baking pans.
Individuals or organizations who can help can call Daniele Moreno at 338-8788 or Cheri Billington, at 400-1160.
Knights of Columbus Auxiliary donates
The Auxiliary of Pope John XXIII Council of the Knights of Columbus recently donated $2,216 to the Shade Tree shelter for women and children.
Located on the southwest corner of Main and Owens streets, the shelter provides a safe, 24-hour place for homeless women and children and helps them take their first step toward independence. The new 38,000-square-foot, three-story facility has 364 beds.
Shade Tree was funded by a $5 million grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, along with Community Development Block Grants from Clark County and the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas.
According to the Knights of Columbus, the shelter had been receiving $4,000 to $5,000 a month in donations to keep it operating. The auxiliary urged other community groups to support the shelter because donations have dropped dramatically since Sept. 11.
Albertson's stores to collect food
A food drive to assist senior citizens during the holidays was kicked off Tuesday at Albertson's stores.
Members of the community are encouraged to bring canned meat, chicken, tuna, vegetables or fruit to the receptacles placed at the entrance of Albertson's stores.
The food collected will be donated to the Las Vegas Senior Nutrition Center, which provides emergency food services to seniors in need.
The goal is to have collected 50,000 pounds of canned goods by Nov. 20, when the food drive will end.
