Letter: Government not worthy of our trust
Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001 | 8:35 a.m.
I would like to respond to the Sun's Nov. 4 editorial, "GOP just can't stand government."
Our government is the very government that allowed its OSHA department to stop all postal workers from wearing masks, which could protect them against anthrax spores.
Our government is the very government that hires and pays top dollar to the INS employees. You know, the ones who can't keep track of visitors who have limited visas.
Our government is the very government that hires and pays top dollar to the customs department. This is a department that couldn't find any wrong with the terrorists or anything that anyone else brings into the United States.
Our government is the very government that has an Internal Revenue Service that takes property from people who don't owe any taxes, sends out checks to people for millions of dollars not due to them, and in general is despised by the public.
Instead of trying to federalize the airport security, our government should set higher standards, stop accepting the lowest bid, and let private industry pay taxes on its income derived from doing its job correctly.
We need some good, old-fashioned common sense. By the way, common sense and the federal government is always known as an oxymoron.
