Officer in fair condition after being hit with board

Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 | 10:45 a.m.

A 26-year-old Metro Police officer was in fair condition this morning after being smashed in the face with a cutting board.

Officer Kyle Hirschi, who has been with Metro since February, was with another officer trying to talk to Marlon Olivas, 36, at the Rancho Mirage Apartments, 4250 S. Arville St., Friday about 1 p.m.

Police allege Olivas hit Hirschi with the board, then slammed the door of his apartment, starting a standoff, Officer Tirso Dominguez, a Metro spokesman, said.

Hours later, police said, Olivas, by then armed with a knife, tried to run from the apartment. A police dog was sent to chase him and Olivas stabbed the dog, who received three stitches in the lip, Dominguez said.

Olivas was taken into custody when he was subdued with a shotgun that fires beanbags, police said.

Police were first called to the apartments about 9:15 a.m. Friday about a man who was shooting at apartment windows with a slingshot. Officers could not locate the man.

The officers returned about 1 p.m. after another call and located Olivas. The confrontation happened so fast, the officer could not protect himself, Dominguez said.
