Henderson teen heads to Washington

A Henderson high school student has been selected by the National Youth Leadership Forum to participate in a five-day law program for students.

Markos Mendoza, an 11th grader at Coronado High School, will join 350 juniors and seniors across the United States at a forum on law that will take place in Washington, D.C., Nov. 13-18.

The National Youth Leadership Forum is a nonprofit organization that sponsors educational programs for outstanding high school students.

The forum is an opportunity for youths interested in law and justice to get an early exposure to those disciplines. During the program, participants will learn about the legal system through specific examples set by attorneys and court officials of all levels.

Holiday gift baskets help visually impaired

The Isight Center for the Blind, a nonprofit organization assisting the visually impaired, is currently selling holiday gift baskets to local community businesses.

The baskets, which are assembled by the center's visually impaired associates, include homemade products such as chocolate bretzel, caramel corn or mocha chip cookies.

The purpose of this new basket program is to provide blind people with jobs during the holiday season and to raise funds for the center, Isight Center President Veronica Wilson said.

The baskets can be purchased for $55 at the Isight Center at 1001 N. Bruce St. They can also be ordered by phone at 642-6000.

The Gem Club's annual Mini-Show

will be from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Multi-Use Building, 1204 Sixth St. The event will feature demonstrations of various lapidary skills such as cabochon making, rock sawing and metal craft jewelry and displays of fossils and fluorescent rocks. Call 293-7853.

An open house program

will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Southern Nevada Carpenters Training Center, 4131 E. Bonanza Road, to help introduce and train young adults, ages 14-20, in the skills of their trade. Those interested should RSVP to Bill Howard at 452-5099, Ext. 12.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation

Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitor's Center. To make reservations or for information, call 363-1922.
