Reid says Bush has been all talk about bipartisanship

Thursday, May 31, 2001 | 10:42 a.m.

RENO -- President Bush can talk the talk when it comes to bipartisanship, and now that the Democrats control the Senate, Congress will find out if the Republican president can walk the walk, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid said.

"Bush has done a lot of talking about bipartisanship. He's constantly talking about it, but he is not bipartisan," said Reid, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate.

"I think now he'll have no choice but to be bipartisan. He needs us and we need him."

Reid reportedly played a significant role in persuading Vermont Sen. James Jeffords to defect from the Republican Party, agreeing to give up a committee chairmanship to Jeffords if he would help put the Democrats in power with a 50-49 Senate majority.
