Thursday, May 31, 2001 | 9:24 a.m.

Leon and Kari Coburn of Las Vegas report that their son John graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., with the class of 2001 and received a commission as an officer in the Navy.

Coburn attended the Meadows School in Las Vegas for 10 years before transferring to Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, graduating in 1997. He was appointed to the Naval Academy by former Nevada Sen. Richard Bryan.

Coburn served an internship in Washington D.C., working with the Navy judge advocate general office last summer conducting research on the causes of collisions and near collisions involving Navy vessels. He served as battalion operations officer during his senior year and also was a starter on Navy's rugby team.

The new ensign has chosen the submarine service and will report to nuclear reactor school in Charleston, S.C., in late August.
