Rhodes still raising money for election

Wednesday, May 30, 2001 | 10:07 a.m.

North Las Vegas Councilman John Rhodes has continued to campaign hard and raise funds after learning in April that he must face an opponent in the general election.

Rhodes, after failing to gain a majority of the votes in the April 3 primary, will head to the June 5 general election against former Planning Commissioner Robert Eliason.

According to the campaign finance report released Tuesday by the North Las Vegas city clerk's office, Rhodes has raised almost $70,000 since the primary election. The report details campaign contributions and expenditures from the days leading up to the April 3 election and after -- from March 23 to May 24.

Rhodes raised $97,948 before the primary.

His challenger to the Ward 1 seat, Eliason, did not turn in his report to the clerk's office by the 6 p.m. deadline, but the report only must be postmarked by Tuesday.

Among the contributors to Rhodes' campaign was El Cortez hotel, which pitched in $10,000. Another $7,800 came from other gaming companies, including Station Casinos. In addition, Republic Services of Southern Nevada contributed $9,900. Rhodes also received about $2,350 from local attorneys, including the Lubbers Law Group.

Rhodes has spent almost $7,000 on printing for the handful of glossy mailers he has sent to city residents. He also sent almost $7,000 to his American Express credit card, although the report does not detail what expenses were accrued. Rhodes also paid $5,000 to Allegra Consulting to help with his campaign.

Rhodes spent $46,450 during the two-month reporting period, compared with nearly $91,000 he spent heading into the primary election.

Of the total $167,098 Rhodes has raised during the campaign, he has about $30,000 remaining.
