Man dies of gunshot wound

Police are looking for a man in connection with the killing of a 20-year-old Henderson resident found shot in the head at his apartment Saturday.

Norman E. Byers died at University Medical Center Tuesday afternoon after undergoing brain surgery, police spokeswoman Valerie Klein said.

Police are looking for Jeff B. Canterbury, 21, who is believed to be in the Las Vegas area and is considered armed and dangerous, Klein said.

The shooting happened about 5 p.m. Saturday at the Morrell Park Apartments, 525 Harris St., near Boulder Highway and Basic Road.

Anyone with information on Canterbury's whereabouts is asked to call police at 565-2009 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Victim found dead in street

A man found bludgeoned to death in the road in the 3400 block of East Cheyenne Avenue has been identified as Leon C. Maynor, 43, of North Las Vegas, the Clark County coroner's office said today.

North Las Vegas Police initially began investigating the Friday afternoon incident as an auto-pedestrian accident. It was reclassified as a homicide when it was discovered the victim had injuries inconsistent with a traffic accident.

The coroner's office said today that an autopsy revealed that the death was the result of a homicide and that Maynor incurred a head injury. No further details were given.

Police were called to the scene about 4 p.m. after getting a report of a body in an eastbound traffic lane. Investigators said they believe Maynor was slain elsewhere and his body was dumped in the street.

Anyone with any information on the homicide can call Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Las Vegan, 39, shot to death

A man shot to death in a downtown motel parking lot has been identified as Thomas Espinosa, 39, of Las Vegas, the Clark County coroner's office said today.

Metro Police dispatchers about 7 a.m. Monday received a call that shots had been fired at the Silver Queen Motel, 1401 E. Carson Ave.

Police arrived at the motel near 14th Street and found Espinosa in the parking lot with a gunshot wound in the head. Paramedics treated him at the scene, but he died from the wound, police said.

The case remains under investigation, police said.

The acting chief of the Nevada Division of Investigations has been named the state law enforcement agency's full-time chief.

Hosmer previously served as the NDI's deputy chief, and focused on state drug enforcement programs.

Hosmer began his career with the Air Force police in 1974, and worked with the Nevada Highway Patrol in 1980 before joining NDI.

Training for the group will run from June 14 through June 24 at the Henderson Fire Training Center, 401 Parson Ave.

Both adult and teenage volunteers are needed, and anyone can become a part of the program, Thomas said.
