Gambling regulator resigns

Wednesday, May 30, 2001 | 10:18 a.m.

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- A government minister who was responsible for overseeing the Jamaican gambling industry resigned on Tuesday, two days after newspaper reports said he wrote bad checks while playing slot machines.

Junior Finance Minister Errol Ennis "indicated his resignation was intended to admit an error of judgment," said Prime Minister P.J. Patterson's office in a written statement.

Ennis was Minister of State in the Finance Ministry, responsible for the gambling industry. He also worked on financing for state projects, among other duties.

There are no casinos in the Caribbean nation, but slot machines and bets on horse racing are allowed.

Sunday's The Gleaner daily newspaper said Ennis had been stripped of his responsibilities for overseeing gambling back in March after bouncing two checks worth a total of Jamaican dlrs 23,000 ($520) while gambling.
