Story: Russian helicopter gunships today circled menacingly over a convoy of Chechen rebels holding more than 100 hostages, and a top Russian commander said the guerrillas must be annihilated.
April 4: Unabomb suspect charged
Story: A former Berkeley math professor suspected of being the Unabomber was charged today with possessing the components of a bomb found in a search of his 10-by-12 foot mountain cabin.
May 13: Swamps impede crash recovery
Story: With a sharpshooter to protect them from snakes and alligators, divers searched the Florida Everglades muck today for critical data recorders and found pitifully disintegrated remains of victims of ValuJet Flight 592.
July 18: FBI says bomb a possibility
Story: Rescuers pulled more than 100 burned bodies from the waters off Long Island, N.Y., today as an FBI terrorism team investigated what caused a TWA jumbo jet to explode over the Atlantic shortly after takeoff. All 228 people aboard were killed.
July 29: Bomb suspect an amateur who wants attention
Story: Investigators and analysts, relying on vast amounts of evidence, believe the man who planted the crude, nail-laced pipe bombs in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park early Saturday was probably a rank amateur, unconnected to any group.
Sept. 9: Four sought in Shakur shooting
Story: Four assailants remained at large today in the near-slaying of rapper Tupac Shakur after a drive-by shooting near the Strip.
