Joe Delaney remembers 1996: Vikki Carr on the Strip at Tropicana
Friday, May 25, 2001 | 8:45 a.m.
Vikki Carr, born Florencia Bisenta de Casilias Martinez Cardona in East Los Angeles, won her first two Grammys for pop songs, "It Must be Him" and "With Pen in Hand." Her third Grammy came in 1985 for a Spanish language album, "Simplemente Mujer." Encouraged by the late Nat "King" Cole, she has been a Las Vegas headline act since the late 1960s, now playing the Orleans once or twice a year, plus starring in Mariachi Festivals here and in Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz. No single artist has done more to popularize the music of Mexico and the Hispanic world, or done more to make this music part of this country's musical culture.
